Even though this is scored by Michael Philip Mossman for just six horns in the Little Big Band Series, the writing is sophisticated and full sounding. Written in 3/4, but featuring an Afro-Cuban 6/8 groove, this marvelous chart includes solos for tenor or trumpet. Instrumentation: 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, rhythm section with optional additional parts for alto sax, tenor sax and trombone.

Made famous by John Coltrane, but treated here in a more traditional Afro-Latin style, this is something a little different for jazz ensemble. As with all Mossman charts, the rhythm section is meticulously notated to ensure the correct style. The 3/4 pattern throughout draws heavily on African influences and the melody is masterfully passed from section to section. A single pentatonic scale works for the solo section, making this a wonderful vehicle for involving many soloists.

Arranged here in a unique samba setting, Michael Mossman provides some surprising twists and turns in this familiar Latin classic. Every section gets into the act, along with a solo for tenor sax, soli spots for the saxes and brass, and some hard-hitting full ensemble passages. If you're looking for a nice change of pace chart for festival or concert performances, this one will be an outstanding choice!

"Alianza," the Spanish word for alliance, is represented here through the high-energy blending of Latin and swing styles. The main melody seamlessly integrates the two styles. There is a written-out jazz solo for trumpet 2 and every section of the band is featured at some point. The lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff. Optional parts included for flute, horn in F, baritone/tenor sax, tuba and percussion. A refreshing challenge! Highly recommended!

Definitely one of Jerome Kern's best offerings! This easy arrangement by premier arranger, Michael Sweeney, features a moderate Latin groove with alternating swing sections. This is an outstanding chart for young groups!

Here's a great way to introduce the bossa nova to even your youngest players! The multitude of tutti ensemble rhythms with limited syncopation and well-crafted rhythm section parts will help get this chart performance-ready in no time. There's an eight-measure solo written for any saxophone, but since the changes require soloists to know only one pentatonic scale, you might want to open it up for additional players! It's also playable with as few as two saxes, one trumpet, one trombone and rhythm section; however full jazz ensemble parts are included. Outstanding!

This original for proficient groups is quietly legato in the beginning and alternates between a Latin and straight eighth-note feel, and draws on the ascending melodic minor scale and its related modes for its source material.
